The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on 5th December 2005, and allows same-sex couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationship..Civil partnerships consequently have equality to married couples in a wide range of legal matters; including protection from domestic violence, the ability to apply for parental responsibility for a civil partner's child, and a duty to provide reasonable maintenance for a civil partner and any child of the union following the break-up of a civil partnership.
There is a formal procedure for disolving a Civil Partnership which is similar in most respects to that for the divorce of a married couple.
