The latest statistics available show that in 2004 there were over 311,000 weddings. During the same period there were over 167,000 divorces,
69% of which were to couples where both parties were in their first marriage.

Average age if a divorcing woman is 40.
69% of all divorces were granted to women.
The most common basis for women to seek a divorce was unreasonable behaviour on the part of their spouse, whereas
the most common basis for men was two years separation by consent.
An undefended divorce, issued locally, will take about five months to process through the court system. This can be considerably lengthened however if one of the parties intentionally creates delays.
Currently a divorce is possible if one or more of the following facts can be established:-
- One party has committed adultery, together with the finding that it has become intolerable for the husband and wife to continue to live together.
- Unreasonable behavoiour of one party, and again that it has become intolerable for the husband and wife to continue to live together.
- Desertion by one of the parties for a period of two years or more.
- Separation for a continuous minimum period of two years if the decree of divorce is consented to by both parties.
- Separation for a continuous minimum period of five years, after which no consent is required from the other party.
